The Role of Harm Reduction

DESCRIPTION: Harm reduction is a set of strategies to reduce the negative consequences associated with substance use and based on the human rights and dignity of people regardless of drug use. Primary prevention is already a part of the spectrum of reducing harm, this presentation will introduce other interventions which prevent harm and can serve to engage individuals in person-centered, trauma informed settings These interventions include overdose prevention with naloxone and with easily accessible medications for opioid use disorder as well as syringe access. Guidance on changing language in order to reduce stigma about people who use drugs will also be discussed.
